　　ragon boat festival, often known as tuen ng festival or duan wu festival, is a traditional chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the chinese calendar. it is also known as the double fifth.[citation needed] it has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of east asia as well, most notably korea.

　　the exact origins of duan wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the chinese poet qu yuan of the warring states period. he committed uicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the chu government. the local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating qu's body. they also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.

　　in the early years of the chinese republic, duan wu was also celebrated as "poets' day", due to qu yuan's status as china's first poet of personal renown.

　　today, people eat zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fishes) and race dragon boats in memory of qu's dramatic death.

　　在上世纪90年代中后期，镜湖的水体呈高富营养化状态，水质严重恶化，水变成了黄色。恶化的原因主要有：芜湖市某医院通过地下水道将大量未经处理的污物、污水直接排进了镜湖；部分素质不高的市民往镜湖里倒垃圾；最可气的是镜湖风景区的某些工作人员竟然在镜湖里洗拖把！慢慢地，镜湖水变成了黄色，湖面上漂浮着许多垃圾，还散发着一股臭味。来到镜湖边的人们都捂着鼻子跑开了，嘴里还不停地说：“真臭！臭死了！”

　　一九九九年DDD二０００年，芜湖市人民政府号召全市人民清理镜湖。首先，工作人员用机器将湖水抽干，再由党员带头和市民们一起挖掉淤泥，最后注入清澈的水。我外公是党员，他有着亲身体验，外公说，那次劳动很累，但改善了镜湖的水质，大伙儿都感到很高兴。

　　现在人们的环保意识增强了，再也没有人往镜湖里扔垃圾、排污水了。当你来到镜湖时，你会看到一片清澈的湖水，水底游来游去的小鱼，湖水旁婀娜的`垂柳和刚长出来的青青的小草。

　　It is terrific! After a month s study, I feel we really need a break for one day, and so do some of my friends. Senior Three should not be filled with study only and relaxation is also an important part. Sometimes relaxation is more useful than an hour s hard work. While having an outing, we can relax ourselves and enjoy the beautiful scenery of autumn --- yellow leaves, attractive sunset against the blue sky and so on. Isn t it enjoyable? Without improving education, china will not be able to develop fast, to catch up with the developed countries technologically and economically, or to greatly improve the living standard of its people. Yet according to recent statistics(统计), there are over 2 million school-age children who can not go to school in the poor rural areas.

　　To help those poor kids go back to school, money seems to be the biggest problem. As there are thousands of things to be done in the construction of our country, our government simply does have enough money to help all those poor children in time. So a nation-wide drive(运动) called the “Hope Project” has been launched to help those children go back to school.

　　The “Hope Project” helps the government a lot financially(财政上). It also brings hope to the children who can not go to school only by depending on their parents. Therefore, I hope that more and more people join in the “Hope Project” to help the poor children.
